The Heat of Bird Nest Season

Planning on doing any land clearing or tree removal? Bird nest season is in full swing!

The legal nesting season in BC generally spans from early spring to late summer, typically from March 1 to August 31, though the exact dates can vary slightly depending on specific species (such as raptors) and geographic location within the Province. This period covers the time when most bird species in the region are actively building nests, laying eggs, and raising their young.

During this time, it is especially important for developers and land users to implement measures to avoid disturbing active nests, as this is when birds are most vulnerable. As of right now, peak nesting season (May - July) is upon us, though some species are late nesters or have multiple broods in a season and continue nesting into late August.

To ensure compliance with legal requirements and to protect bird populations, bird nest surveys are required during March 1 - August 31. The nests of some species, including bald eagles, osprey, peregrine falcons, great blue herons, and pileated woopecker are protected year-round and additional considerations may be required for working around these species.
