2024 Instream Work Window is Almost Here

Summer is around the corner and so is the least risk instream work window. Secure your permits soon to ensure timing to complete your projects!

What is the Least Risk Instream Work Window?

The least risk instream work window is a specific timeframe when activities in and about a stream are the least likley to impact aquatic species. Most notably, when no fish spawning is taking place. In BC this window typically occurs between August 1 - September 15 to adequately plan around salmonids critical spawning and rearing periods. Other aquatic species may be present in the watershed, including species-at-risk and the timing window may need to be adjusted in consideration of these species.

What Type of Work Must Adhere to It?

Several types of projects must comply with instream work windows including (but not limited to):

Construction and Maintenance of Infrastructure: Bridges, culverts, and roads that cross water bodies.

Dredging and Excavation: Clearing of sediment and debris from rivers and streams.

Bank Stabilization and Erosion Control: Activities to prevent erosion and protect riverbanks.

Fish Habitat Restoration: Projects aimed at improving habitats for fish and other aquatic life.

Watercourse Realignment: Modifying the course of a stream or river for various purposes.

 Permits and Compliance

In most waterbodies, a fish and amphibian salvage may be required to ensure instream works do not harm any present aquatic species. These salvages are especially important for projects requiring any stream isolation, diversion, and temporary dewatering to ensure a fish/amphibian free work zone. Specific permits are required for any work affecting fish, amphibians, or species-at-risk, and typically require 30-90 days for approval
